Q. Many people in the industry are already familiar with your company, but could you tell us again about your business and what makes your company unique?
Kyoyukai is a full-service dental laboratory primarily serving Tokyo and the three surrounding prefectures. We produce both insurance-covered and private-treatment restorations, always with the fundamental goal of delivering high-quality dental prostheses to the dental clinics with which we work.
Systematization through CAD/CAM has become essential in dental technology. We are therefore focusing on improving operational efficiency and creating a more comfortable working environment. Even as automation progresses, the final stages of dental laboratory work still depend on the hands of dental technicians.
At a time when the industry is experiencing a shortage of dental technicians, we remain grateful to the qualified professionals who choose to work for our company. With that in mind, we strive to be a company that genuinely values its employees.

Q. What led you to consider Edge HD and DH Sonic Mighty 4K for improving operational efficiency and the working environment, and what ultimately influenced your decision?
We had previously used an older DOF scanner, so Edge HD was our first candidate. Compared with the previous model, it offered a larger scanning area in a single capture and improved data-matching performance, making it even easier to use. These improvements led us to select it.
Before we discovered DH Sonic Mighty 4K, printing speed had been our highest priority when selecting a 3D printer. After the product was introduced to us, we visited a site to see it in operation. Its speed was not quite what we had originally been seeking, but we confirmed that its large build platform could produce a high volume of parts at once and that it was easy to operate. This allowed us to clearly envision how it would fit into our workflow.
Because we produce a very large number of dental products, its affordable price, which made it possible to install multiple units, was another major advantage.

Q. How has your experience been after using the products?
We mainly use the printers to fabricate custom trays and record bases. Because staff can perform other tasks while printing is underway, the system is extremely convenient.
For custom trays, we arrange the parts horizontally during the day and vertically for overnight production. We operate multiple printers at full capacity for three or four production cycles each day. We now use the printer even for a single urgent tray. We like the workflow so much that we would not want to return to manual fabrication.
Whenever we have a problem with any of the products, support staff respond quickly by telephone and can also assist us remotely. This allows us to use the products with confidence.

Q. Running the printers four times a day is impressive. What design software do you use?
We use Digistell and exocad. For metal frameworks, we use exocad because it can create mesh designs that closely reproduce the appearance of manually designed frameworks. For insurance-covered bars and similar products, we use Digistell, which we introduced earlier.
Q. Are there any areas where you would like to see further improvements?
DH Sonic Mighty 4K requires relatively frequent calibration of the Z-axis build platform. It would be helpful if calibration were required less often or if the fixing screws were easier to operate. We understand that some compromises are inevitable with an affordably priced model. We are satisfied with the running costs of items such as the resin vat and film.
Q. What advice would you give to those considering purchasing these products?
We use several different printers according to their respective strengths. Each laboratory has different requirements depending on what it intends to print and whether its priorities are accuracy, speed, or production volume. I recommend comparing the available products carefully.
It is also important to consider whether the printer will fit your existing workflow or whether you can adapt the workflow to the printer. Problems are inevitable when introducing a first 3D printer or installing multiple units. To avoid production interruptions, I recommend enrolling in a support plan.
Q. Are there any other products that you are interested in?
We would consider products such as metal 3D printers that can directly print final prostheses.
We have heard that the NextDent 5100 offers extremely fast printing and high accuracy. We are also considering whether selecting different printers according to the material could further improve efficiency and create a more comfortable working environment.
