Case Study 6 Main Image

Q. Please tell us about your main laboratory work and the key characteristics of your company.

Shinwa Shiken Co., Ltd. is a dental laboratory headquartered in Niigata with a history of more than 60 years. The Kanto Branch was established in Warabi, Saitama Prefecture, in 2015 under the concept of “Delivering smiles throughout Japan from Japan’s smallest city.”
We fabricate suction dentures, BPS dentures, implant overdentures, non-metal clasp dentures, and other removable prostheses. We also produce implant restorations using CAD/CAM systems.

Q. Why did you choose the DWX-53DC, previously the DWX-52D, and the CAM software MillBox?

We previously used an overseas-manufactured milling machine, but we had concerns about the available support. One reason we considered the DGSHAPE DWX series was that it is manufactured in Japan, has been installed widely throughout the country, and appeared highly reliable.
Our Niigata headquarters had already introduced a DWX machine, which gave us an opportunity to speak with representatives from DGSHAPE. During that discussion, we learned that DGSHAPE uses MillBox in its own product development, and that immediately increased our interest in the software.
Knowing that DENKEN-HIGHDENTAL supplied MillBox gave us additional confidence. We also wanted to explore milled dentures, so the combination of a DWX machine and MillBox became the natural choice.

Q. Why did you choose the NextDent 5100 and DH Sonic Mighty 4K 3D printers?

Our initial interest came from hearing that the NextDent 5100 was very popular in the United States. We visited the DENKEN-HIGHDENTAL office in Kita-Akabane to see a demonstration unit. I remember being impressed by its extremely fast printing speed, adequate build area, and clean printed results.
We also saw considerable future potential in the range of available materials, which led us to introduce the machine. We subsequently added DH Sonic Mighty 4K because it supported Class II materials before the NextDent 5100 did and offered a large build area.

Q. How does Koji Nozawa, who lectures on milled dentures for DGSHAPE and DENKEN-HIGHDENTAL, decide between milling and 3D printing?

Use in complete denture cases
Because 3D-printed dentures can be offered at a slightly lower price, we select 3D printing when a case has that requirement. We also use it for cases with substantial undercuts, such as maxillofacial prostheses, and for try-in dentures.
For milled dentures, we can use conventional denture base resins and composite resin teeth, and the final result is very clean. We therefore mainly use milling for definitive dentures. Processing has also become faster with the DWX-53DC, and we are very satisfied with it.

Use according to the type of prosthesis
We mill prosthetic restorations and 3D-print record bases and custom trays. For splints, we use both milling and 3D printing. In cases involving demanding occlusal conditions, we select milled splints because they can be fabricated from materials with an established clinical record.
Both methods offer dramatically higher efficiency than manual fabrication, and the fit has been evaluated as equal to or better than that of manually fabricated products. Model-free splints produced from intraoral scan data have also been very well received and have become a successful new product for our laboratory.

Q. Since we are discussing your equipment, could you also tell us about your experience with the casting machine?

DENKEN-HIGHDENTAL casting machines and ring furnaces are extremely robust and give us confidence in everyday use. Our staff particularly like NeoSuperCascom because it melts the alloy automatically, allowing them to perform other tasks at the same time. We use it with confidence for precious metal alloys, and casting defects in metal frameworks are also uncommon.

Q. What advice would you give to those considering purchasing these products?

For a small or medium-sized laboratory, I recommend choosing versatile equipment that can handle a wide variety of applications with a single milling machine, 3D printer, or casting machine.

Q. Are there any other products that you are interested in?

I have heard from other dental technicians that Jet Clean is extremely convenient, so I would like to have one. At the moment, I am trying to decide where we could install it.
